Join Derwent Harp School for our first ever Discover The Harp Course on Guernsey.

Bank Holiday Monday from 10 till 12.30 at Town Church - St Peter Port (if you are coming in on the Fred Olsen cruise it’s right opposite the tender landing pier)

Our musical director Helen-Elizabeth has 20 years of teaching experience holding a BA Hons, DipABRSM and CTABRSM qualifications, she is also the Harp Specialist for the International School of Musicians. Former students have gone on to all the major conservatories and on to Oxford and Cambridge to study music. Derwent Harp School students have also had considerable success on the Eisteddfod circuit over the years. She herself studied with the world famous professor of harp David Watkins. You will also get to meet our Harp Maker Paul and hear how your harp was created especially for you.

This course is a complete introduction to playing the harp for beginners including your own personalised Discovery 16 Harp made in Wales, Tuning Key and Course Book to take home and keep plus ISOM step 1 Certificate (follows in the post) . No prior musical experience needed. 

The course is suitable for ages 16 + - under 16s with musical experience also welcome but MUST be accompanied by an adult.

By the end of the morning  you will be surprised at how many tunes you will able to play. We will learn simple rounds, popular folk tunes and even some popular classics, including Ode to Joy , Frere Jaques,  Good King Wenceslas,  Chaconne, Pwt Ar Y Bys plus many more favourites.

Numbers strictly limited and bookings will close on 1/7/2024 to allow time for the harps to be made for the big day.

Harps and books will be sent out in advance of the course - don’t forget to bring them with you.

This course is endorsed and certified by the International School of Musicians. Students who took this course last summer have already gone on to achieve Distinction at graded exams with International School of Musicians using their discovery 16 Harps. There will be the opportunity to continue your lessons with our qualified online tutors should you wish to do so.

You can use your Discovery 16 Harp for Step 1 and 2 plus grades 1,2,3, 4 and 5 with the International School of Musicians exam board. 

One student started with a Discover The Harp Course last summer and went on to be part of the winning year 6 and under ensemble at 2022 Urdd Eisteddfod.
